What's in a name?

A Holm Oak, also called, "Holly Oak" or "Evergreen Oak" is a large evergreen oak native to the Mediterranean region. It takes it's name from "holm", another name for "holly", presumably because the leaves are somewhat spiny and resemble holly leaves.

So, why name the foundation after the "Holm Oak"? The Holm Oak has a rich history in literature and religion.

  • The wood of a Holm Oak tree is hard, strong, and tough. It lives for centuries and has been used since ancient times primarily to craft pillars to hold up important structures. We feel such a tree is a worthy metaphor for our mission--to hold up the important structures of traditional famliy values.
  • The Holm Oak is a tree favored in the bible for its strength and stateliness. It is referenced in several places:
    • "A holm-oak is set apart, he chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning craftsman to set up an image, that shall not be moved." [Isaiah 40:20]
    • "He cuts down cedars; or he chooses a holm tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest; he plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it." [Isaiah 44:14]
  • The Holm Oak played a central role in the approved apparitions of the Blessed Mother in Fatima, Portugal.
